Leak testing & pressure diagnosis
The definitive answer to "is there a leak" comes from instrumentation, not noses. With appliances shut off, a manometer reads pressure across the consumer piping; a stable reading proves tightness, while any decay over the test period confirms an escape. Isolating branches and appliances one at a time then corners the defect.
Scope
What this covers
Full-installation pressure drop test at the meter outlet
Branch-by-branch isolation to localise the losing section
Electronic gas detector sweeps along accessible pipe routes
Soap-solution confirmation at suspect joints and fittings
Timing
When it's needed
Any persistent gas odour, a retailer or network notice about an escape on the property, gas usage that climbed without explanation, or an appliance repeatedly starving and cutting out. Testing is also the first act after any renovation that disturbed gas lines.
A strong gas smell or the sound of escaping gas means leave first and arrange repairs second: clear the building, keep ignition sources (switches, phones, vehicles) well away, and isolate the meter or cylinders only if safely reachable. Report significant escapes to the gas network's emergency line before booking any gasfitting work.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Size and complexity of the installation being tested
How many appliances and branches need individual isolation
Accessibility of piping in walls, under floors and underground
Whether the meter can be locked off during the test window
Gasfitting in NSW may only be carried out by a person holding gasfitting authorisation issued through NSW Fair Trading, and it is a separate authorisation from a general plumbing licence. Certifiable gasfitting work must be documented on completion: ask to sight the gasfitting licence before work begins, and expect the certificate afterwards.
