Gasfitting work
Consumer piping repairs
Everything downstream of the meter, the consumer piping: is the property owner's responsibility, and it ages like every other buried and in-wall service. Threaded steel corrodes at joints, old copper fatigues at bends, and fittings loosen with decades of thermal movement. Repairs cut the defective section out and rebuild it to the current gasfitting standard.
Scope
What this covers
Excavating and repairing failed buried gas lines
Renewing corroded threaded-steel sections in copper or multilayer pipe
Rebuilding defective joints, elbows and unions found during testing
Re-testing the full installation before gas is restored
Timing
When it's needed
A failed pressure test traced to the pipework itself, corrosion found during other trades' excavation, or an old installation being extended for a new appliance. Landscaping and fencing work that nicked a buried line is another regular trigger.
A strong gas smell or the sound of escaping gas means leave first and arrange repairs second: clear the building, keep ignition sources (switches, phones, vehicles) well away, and isolate the meter or cylinders only if safely reachable. Report significant escapes to the gas network's emergency line before booking any gasfitting work.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Buried versus in-wall versus roof-space pipe routes
Material of the existing installation and what it connects to
Length of the defective run and whether renewal beats repair
Reinstatement of surfaces opened to reach the piping
Gasfitting in NSW may only be carried out by a person holding gasfitting authorisation issued through NSW Fair Trading, and it is a separate authorisation from a general plumbing licence. Certifiable gasfitting work must be documented on completion: ask to sight the gasfitting licence before work begins, and expect the certificate afterwards.
